About FSSAI

Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) is a statutory body established under the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India. The FSSAI has been established under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, which is a consolidating statute related to food safety and regulation in India. FSSAI is responsible for protecting and promoting public health through the regulation and supervision of food safety.

What is FSSAI Food License Registration ?

Every food business operator involved in the manufacturing, processing, storage distribution and sale of food products must compulsorily obtain FSSAI Registration or License.

It is a 14-digit registration or a license number that is printed on all the food packages. The licensing and registration procedure and requirements are regulated by Food Safety & Standards (Licensing and Registration of Food Business) Regulations, 2011.

Types of FSSAI Registration 

There are three types of FSSAI licenses. These categories depend upon the type and size of the food business and its total annual turnover as well.

  1. FSSAI Basic License
  2. FSSAI State License
  3. FSSAI Central License

1. Basic Registration 

If the annual turnover of the business is less than 12 lakhs then the food business operator shall get registered with Registration Form A. OR For Dairy Plant having capacity of upto 500 Litres of Milk per Day and For Manufacturing Unit- Upto 100kg production per day.

2. State Licence 

If the annual turnover of the business is between 12 to 20 crores then the food business operator shall apply for State license Form B. OR Dairy Plant having capacity of upto 50000 Litres of Milk per Day and For Manufacturing Unit- Upto 2MT per day Production

3. Central Licence 

If the annual turnover of the business is above 20 crores, then the food business operator shall apply for Central License Form B. OR For Dairy Plant having capacity of above 50000 Litres of Milk per Day and For Manufacturing Unit- more than 2MT per day Production. FSSAI Central License is mandatory for Ecommerce Website Owners and Import Export Business.

Based on the range mentioned above of annual turnover, a food business operator has to Apply for FSSAI online Registration.

A. Documents required for FSSAI Basic Registration (Form A )

  1. Photo Identity Proof of Food Business Operator - Aadhar Card/Pan Card/Passport
  2. Passport Size Photo of Food Business Operator
  3. Proof of Premises - Electricity Bill / Rent Agreement
  4. Partnership Deed ( If Partnership Firm)
  5. Water Testing report ( For Manufacturing / Restaurant )

B. Documents required for FSSAI State or Central License

  1. Photo Identity Proof of Food Business Operator - Aadhar Card/Pan Card/Passport
  2. Passport Size Photo of Food Business Operator
  3. Proof of Premises - Electricity Bill / Rent Agreement
  4. Water Testing Report ( For Manufacturers/Restaurant)
  5. Unit Layout Map ( For Manufacturers/Restaurant)
  6. List of Food Products
  7. List of Equipments
  8. Certificate of Incorporation (if company)

Process for FSSAI Food License Registration Online:

  1. FSSAI registration is initiated by submitting Form A (application for Registration) or Form B (application for State and Central License) to the Food and Safety Department or by applying online on the FSSAI Registration Portal.
  2. The application must be accompanied by the required documents. It must be uploaded online on the FSSAI Registration Portal at the time of filling up the application.
  3. This application can be accepted or it may be rejected by the Department within 7 days (Basic Registration and 60 days (FSSAI State or Central License ) from the date of receipt of an application and the rejection has to be intimated to the applicant in writing.
  4. If the application is accepted, then the department will grant a registration certificate with the registration number and the photo of the applicant.

FBO should prominently display the certificate of registration at the place of business during business hours.
