Places to visit in Khammam District

Khammam district occupies an area of 4,453.00 square kilometres (1,719.31 sq mi). According to 2011 Census of India, the district has a population of 1,401,639. The name Khammam has been derived from the name of a local hill called Stambhadri, which is home to an ancient temple of NarasimhaSwamy. The name of the town, Stambhadri, was later called Kambhadri, Kambhammettu, and finally, Khammam. The town is located close to the river Munneru a tributary of the Krishna River.

Khammam Fort

The 1000-year-old Khammam Fort was built during Kakatiyas’ regime. It is located on Stambhadri hill. Since then, it had passed the hands of many rulers and had undergone various modifications leading to further enhancement of the fort’s appearance and strength. The fort displays the influences of Hindu and Islam architecture, which are spectacular. The steps constructed to reach the top have made access to the fort easier now. The fort and the temples located on top make the place a major tourist attraction.

Parnashala

Parnasala is a small village located at a distance of 32 kilometers from the holy town Bhadrachalam in the state of Telangana, India. A little glitch in reaching the village is its remote location because of which makes it a little difficult to access. One can reach Parnasala only by road or boats as the means of transportation.

According to the legend, the most disciplined Lord Shri Ram spent some of his fourteen years of exile at this place. The little stream stands as a testimony to the belief that Sita, wife of Lord Shri Ram, took her bath in the stream, the place is called Sita Vaagu. Every belief is justified one such proof is the imprints in “Radhagutta” in Parnasala. Another story accounting to the history of this historical village is that Maricha Rakshas was killed by Lord Shri Ram in the same place when he came in disguise as a golden deer to deceive Goddess Sita.

Kallur

Kallur is a famous pilgrimage centre in Khammam. The place is over 400 years old and it has two famous temples, which are thronged by devotees and tourists alike. The temple devoted to Lord Venu Gopala Swamy was built during the reign of Queen Rudrama Devi and Shiva temple was built by Prathapa Rudra.

Lakaram Lake

Lakaram Lake is a popular tourist attraction in Khammam. The lake is promoted as a tourist spot with a park adjacent to the lake called Lakaram Lake View. The lake has boating facilities.

Nelakondapalli

Nelakondapalli gains religious importance as it is associated with Mahabharata, one of the famous epics of Hinduism. Archaeological evidences bear traces of Mahabharata period. The ancient temples found here highlight the cultural past and the architectural brilliance.

Sri Venkateshwara Swamy Temple

Famously known as Telangana Tirupati, Sri Venkateshwara Swamy Temple is located in Jamalapuram, which is around 79 kms from Khammam. This ancient temple was visited by the famous Vijayanagar ruler Krishna Deva Raya, who renovated the temple. Considered to be more than 1000 years old, the temple is located in a scenic landscape, which offers spectacular views of green hills in the vicinity.

Gundala

The hot springs that spread across an area of 100 square yard in Gundala attracts devotees from various parts of India. It is believed that the hot springs were created by the serpent king Adi Sesha. Gundala is located near the famous Bhadrachalam, which is yet another tourist spot in Telangana.
